Reading comprehension 6: Read the passage below and choose A, B, C, or D to answer each question.
Recent research examines why expressions of anger in digital environments often appear more intense and amplified than in face-to-face communication. The study focuses on how anger is produced, perceived, and interpreted across different online contexts.
The research analyzes language used in social media comment sections and survey-based interpersonal interactions to identify patterns of emotional expression. A key finding is the distinction between direct interpersonal communication and general online commentary. When individuals believe they are communicating with a specific person, they tend to regulate their language more carefully, even when expressing disagreement or frustration. In contrast, public comment sections show significantly less restraint, with more aggressive tone, capitalization, and emotionally charged wording.
The study identifies this heightened expression as “hot anger”, a form of anger characterized by loud, hostile, and emotionally intense language. Hot anger appears more frequently in environments where social distance is greater and social presence is reduced, such as anonymous or semi-anonymous online spaces.
Context is shown to play a critical role in interpreting anger. More than half of the participants reported difficulty determining whether a message was angry or hostile without knowing the surrounding situation or the relationship between the speakers. The same linguistic expression could be interpreted differently depending on context.
The research also explores rage bait, defined as content intentionally designed to provoke anger in others in order to increase engagement. Importantly, the study notes that rage bait does not require the content creator to feel anger themselves; instead, it functions as a mechanism that stimulates and circulates anger within digital spaces. Overall, the findings highlight how platform design, social distance, and contextual ambiguity contribute to the amplification of anger online.
